Period proud. Peer support. Positive change.

A whole-school programme designed to make periods feel normal, supported and nothing to be embarrassed about. Drawing on best practice and research showing how stigma and lack of support affect attendance and performance, our programme builds confidence, community and lasting culture change.

🩸 What is it?
This is a school-wide initiative to promote menstrual wellbeing and peer-led support. Everyone benefits from practical resources, awareness campaigns and ready-access products, while selected students also receive deeper learning and leadership opportunities through workshops and ongoing support.

🩸 What’s the purpose?
We’ve designed this programme to:
* Make periods feel less awkward and more understood for everyone
* Help students feel confident and informed about their bodies
* Encourage open conversations about moods, cramps, flow and cycle-related wellbeing
* Ensure products, information and support are available for all
* Strengthen kindness, confidence and peer support across the school community
Menstrual wellbeing — where students feel informed, supported and confident — not only fosters a kinder school culture but also supports participation and engagement in learning.

🩸 Why this matters (UK research)
Recent UK findings highlight that period-related issues are affecting students’ school experiences:
* Nearly two million girls in the UK have missed part or all of a school day because of their period, with many reporting difficulty catching up on classwork as a result (Plan UK, 2021.)
* Research shows teachers perceive menstrual cycles to influence school attendance, confidence and behaviour — linking gaps in education and support with lower participation (pub med, 2022.)
* A study in England found that menstrual symptoms like pain and heavy bleeding were associated with increased absence and lower GCSE attainment, underscoring why better support matters.
These are not isolated issues — they’re signals that better menstrual literacy, products and supportive environments can help students stay in class and learn with confidence (University of Bristol & Exeter, 2025.)

🩸 What participants do
As part of the programme, students and staff will:
* Take part in creative, school-wide campaigns and activities that normalise menstruation
* Make free period products and informational resources widely accessible in school
* Learn practical self-care strategies and symptom management tips
* (For selected students) join small-group workshops each term that build leadership and peer-support skills
* (Where available) participate in drop-in spaces for discussion and support
This approach blends empowerment with inclusion — reducing stigma while strengthening practical capability.

🩸 What is menstrual wellbeing
* Understanding your cycle and what’s typical (vs what’s not)
* Knowing how to manage symptoms with confidence and support
* Having access to products, information and support without embarrassment or barriers
When students feel seen, informed and supported, they’re more likely to remain engaged and resilient in their learning environment.

🩸 What schools receive
Schools participating in the Menstrual Ambassadors Programme will gain:
* Free period products and educational resources available across the school
* Creative campaigns and engagement activities that involve the whole community
* Targeted workshops and support sessions for Ambassadors
* A move toward a period-proud, stigma-free environment where students thrive

* Programme Facilitator — Delivers training, workshops and reflective check-ins
* School Staff — Supports implementation and ensures integration into school life
* Student Ambassadors — Lead projects, peer support and awareness efforts
* All Students — Benefit from improved resources, understanding and a culture of respect
